How to Choose the Right Spring Bulbs for Your Landscape

As winter draws to a close and the first signs of spring begin to emerge, there’s nothing quite as rewarding as seeing your landscape burst into a riot of colors. Spring bulbs are the perfect way to introduce vibrant hues and enchanting blooms to your property, setting the stage for a stunning garden that evolves throughout the warmer months. However, choosing the right bulbs requires careful planning and consideration to ensure a cohesive, beautiful display. Here’s a guide to selecting the perfect spring bulbs for your luxury landscape.

1. Consider Your Climate and Growing Zone

Understanding your region’s climate and growing zone is the first step in choosing the right spring bulbs. Different bulbs thrive in different climates, so it’s crucial to select varieties that are well-suited to your local conditions. For example, tulips and daffodils perform beautifully in cooler climates, while amaryllis and freesias are better suited to warmer regions. Knowing your growing zone will help you select bulbs that not only survive but also thrive, ensuring a successful and vibrant spring display.

2. Plan for a Succession of Blooms

To enjoy continuous color throughout the spring season, it’s important to choose bulbs that bloom at different times. Early bloomers like crocuses and snowdrops are among the first to appear, often blooming even before the last frost has passed. Mid-season bloomers such as tulips and hyacinths follow, filling your garden with vibrant colors and sweet fragrances. Finally, late bloomers like alliums and Spanish bluebells extend the display into early summer. By carefully selecting a mix of early, mid, and late-blooming bulbs, you can create a garden that evolves beautifully over the course of the season.

3. Coordinate Colors and Varieties

Spring is the season of color, and the right combination of hues can transform your garden into a visual masterpiece. When selecting bulbs, think about how colors will work together to create harmony or contrast in your landscape. For a serene, cohesive look, opt for a monochromatic palette—such as all-white daffodils or shades of purple tulips. If you prefer a bolder, more dynamic display, mix complementary colors like yellow daffodils with blue hyacinths or pink tulips with orange fritillarias. Also, consider the size and shape of the flowers, as varying these elements adds depth and texture to your garden design.

4. Evaluate Sunlight and Soil Conditions

The specific conditions of your landscape will greatly influence the success of your spring bulbs. Most spring bulbs prefer well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade. However, some varieties, like woodland bulbs (such as trilliums and anemones), thrive in shadier, more forest-like conditions. Before purchasing bulbs, assess the sunlight exposure and soil quality of your planting areas. Ensure that the bulbs you select are compatible with the existing conditions to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.

5. Consider Maintenance and Care

While spring bulbs are generally low-maintenance, they do require some care to ensure they return year after year. Perennial bulbs, such as daffodils and alliums, will naturalize over time, meaning they’ll multiply and return each spring with minimal effort on your part. However, some bulbs, like tulips, may need to be replanted annually to maintain their vigor and bloom quality. Consider the level of maintenance you’re willing to commit to when selecting your bulbs. If you prefer a more hands-off approach, opt for hardy perennials that will provide consistent, reliable blooms with little upkeep.

Transform Your Landscape with Carefully Selected Spring Bulbs

Choosing the right spring bulbs is a crucial step in creating a luxurious, vibrant garden that welcomes the new season with style. By considering your climate, planning for a succession of blooms, coordinating colors, evaluating site conditions, and factoring in maintenance needs, you can design a spring landscape that is both breathtaking and enduring. How to Plant a Stunning Fall Container

As the vibrant colors of summer give way to the rich, warm hues of fall, it’s the perfect time to refresh your outdoor space with seasonal containers. Fall containers are a wonderful way to bring the beauty of autumn to your patios, porches, and garden beds, creating focal points that celebrate the season. To ensure your fall containers are both beautiful and thriving, here are five key considerations to keep in mind when planning your autumnal display.

1. Choose Cold-Hardy Plants

Fall weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures fluctuating dramatically from warm afternoons to chilly nights. Choosing cold-hardy plants is essential to ensure your container garden remains vibrant throughout the season. Plants like mums, pansies, ornamental kale, and heuchera are excellent choices, as they can withstand cooler temperatures and even light frosts. These resilient plants will keep your containers looking fresh and full of life, even as the weather turns colder.

2. Consider Container Size and Drainage

The size of your container is more than just a design choice—it plays a critical role in the health of your plants. A container that is too small can restrict root growth, leading to stunted plants that struggle to thrive. On the other hand, a well-sized container provides ample space for roots to grow and for plants to spread out. Additionally, ensuring your container has adequate drainage is crucial, especially during the rainy fall months. Without proper drainage, excess water can accumulate, leading to waterlogged soil and root rot. Selecting a container with multiple drainage holes will help maintain the ideal moisture level for your plants.

3. Focus on Color and Texture

One of the joys of fall gardening is the opportunity to play with the season’s rich color palette and diverse textures. When planning your fall container, think beyond just color and consider the overall texture and form of the plants. For instance, you might combine the soft, delicate blooms of asters with the bold, spiky foliage of ornamental grasses. Or, pair the vibrant, rounded leaves of heuchera with the cascading fronds of ferns. By mixing different leaf shapes, plant heights, and color tones, you can create a container that is visually dynamic and full of seasonal charm.

4. Sunlight Requirements

Not all fall plants have the same sunlight needs, so it’s important to choose plants that will thrive in the same lighting conditions. Whether your container will be placed in full sun, partial shade, or full shade, select plants that share similar sunlight requirements. This will ensure that all your plants receive the appropriate amount of light, leading to healthier growth and a more cohesive look. For example, if your container will be in a sunny spot, opt for sun-loving plants like ornamental peppers and marigolds. If it will be in a shadier location, consider shade-tolerant options like ferns and coleus.

5. Seasonal Longevity

Why It Matters:
Fall containers can be a long-lasting addition to your landscape, but it’s important to consider the lifespan of the plants you choose. Some fall annuals, like pansies and chrysanthemums, may bloom beautifully for a few weeks but will fade as the season progresses. To keep your container looking its best throughout the fall, consider combining early-blooming plants with those that will last until the first hard frost. Alternatively, plan to swap out plants as needed to maintain a fresh and vibrant display. This approach ensures that your container continues to provide visual interest from the first cool days of autumn to the onset of winter.

Create a Stunning Fall Display with Thoughtful Planning

By taking these five key considerations into account, you can create fall containers that are not only visually stunning but also healthy and long-lasting. From selecting the right plants to ensuring proper container size and drainage, every detail contributes to the success of your autumnal display. Ready to bring the beauty of fall to your landscape? Enhancements to Extend Your Outdoor Season into Fall

As summer transitions to fall, your outdoor living space can remain a vibrant and inviting part of your home. With the right enhancements, you can enjoy your landscape well into the cooler months. Whether you’re hosting autumn gatherings or seeking a cozy retreat, here are five top landscape upgrades to transform your outdoor area into a year-round sanctuary.

1. Install Outdoor Heating Elements

As the temperatures begin to dip, outdoor heating elements become essential for maintaining comfort in your outdoor spaces. Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, and patio heaters not only provide warmth but also add a touch of luxury. Imagine gathering around a roaring fire on cool autumn evenings, enjoying the company of friends and family. These features create a cozy ambiance that makes your outdoor space inviting even as the weather cools down. Plus, the flickering flames of a fire pit or fireplace add visual interest, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

2. Incorporate Outdoor Lighting

With shorter days in fall, outdoor lighting becomes crucial for extending the usability of your landscape after dark. Strategically placed lighting can illuminate pathways, highlight architectural features, and create a welcoming atmosphere. Consider using a mix of pathway lights, string lights, and uplighting on trees to add depth and warmth to your outdoor space. Not only does this enhance safety by lighting up walkways and steps, but it also adds a magical glow that transforms your garden into an enchanting retreat in the evening.

3. Add a Covered Patio or Pergola

A covered patio or pergola offers shelter from the elements, allowing you to enjoy your outdoor space even in less-than-ideal weather. Whether it’s a light autumn drizzle or a breezy day, a covered area keeps you comfortable while still allowing you to appreciate the beauty of your landscape. For added versatility, consider installing retractable screens or curtains that can be drawn to block out the wind or cold, creating a more intimate and cozy setting. This enhancement not only extends the usability of your space but also adds an architectural feature that elevates the design of your outdoor area.

4. Use Cold-Hardy Plants and Seasonal Decor

As the growing season winds down, choosing cold-hardy plants like ornamental grasses, mums, and evergreens ensures that your landscape remains vibrant and colorful. These plants thrive in cooler temperatures and maintain their beauty throughout the fall. Complement your planting scheme with seasonal decor such as pumpkins, gourds, and autumn wreaths to celebrate the season and add visual interest. The combination of hardy plants and festive decor creates a dynamic landscape that captures the essence of fall, keeping your outdoor space lively and inviting.

5. Plant Seasonal Containers

Fall containers are an excellent way to introduce fall colors and textures into your landscape. By selecting plants that thrive in cooler temperatures—such as pansies, kale, and ornamental cabbage—you can create stunning displays that last throughout the season. These containers are versatile and can be placed on patios, porches, or around seating areas to add vibrant splashes of color where they’re most needed. Swapping out summer annuals for fall favorites not only refreshes your outdoor space but also helps it transition seamlessly into the new season.

Transform Your Outdoor Space for Year-Round Enjoyment

With these five enhancements, you can extend the life of your outdoor living space and continue to enjoy it throughout the fall. From adding warmth and light to creating cozy retreats, these upgrades ensure that your landscape remains a central part of your home’s living space, no matter the season. Ready to elevate your outdoor experience? Contact our expert team today to discuss how we can help you transform your landscape into a luxurious, all-season oasis.

5 Ways to Elevate Your Pool: A Guide to Renovations

Your pool is more than just a place to swim—it’s a central feature of your outdoor living space, a hub for relaxation and entertainment. As seasons change and trends evolve, updating your pool can dramatically enhance its functionality, aesthetics, and overall value. Whether you’re looking to breathe new life into an aging pool or transform your backyard into a resort-like oasis, here are five effective ways to renovate your pool.

1. Update the Pool Finish:

Over time, pool surfaces naturally wear down, becoming rough, discolored, or even cracked. An outdated finish can detract from the beauty of your entire outdoor space. By replastering or applying a new finish—such as pebble, quartz, or glass beads—you can completely rejuvenate your pool’s appearance. Modern finishes not only offer a smoother, more attractive surface but also come in a wide array of colors and textures, allowing you to customize your pool to match your aesthetic preferences. Additionally, these materials are more durable and resistant to the elements, ensuring your pool looks stunning for years to come.

2. Install Energy-Efficient Equipment

In today’s environmentally conscious world, energy efficiency is more important than ever. Upgrading to energy-efficient equipment, such as variable-speed pumps, solar heaters, and LED lighting, can significantly reduce your pool’s operational costs while enhancing its sustainability. Variable-speed pumps are particularly popular because they adjust their speed based on the pool’s needs, leading to lower energy consumption and quieter operation. Solar heaters harness the power of the sun to warm your pool, reducing the need for traditional energy sources. By investing in these upgrades, you’ll enjoy a pool that’s not only eco-friendly but also more cost-effective to maintain.

Before

3. Add Water Features

Water features can elevate a standard pool into a luxurious retreat. Imagine the tranquil sound of a waterfall cascading into your pool, or the sleek, modern aesthetic of a sheer descent. Fountains, deck jets, and scuppers add movement and sound, creating a dynamic atmosphere that enhances both the visual and sensory appeal of your space. Whether you’re aiming for a resort-like ambiance or a more understated elegance, incorporating water features is an excellent way to make your pool a focal point of your landscape.

4. Incorporate Smart Pool Technology

As technology continues to advance, incorporating smart features into your pool is a smart investment. With smart pool technology, you can control nearly every aspect of your pool—from lighting and temperature to cleaning systems—right from your smartphone or tablet. Automation systems can monitor water quality, adjust chemical levels, and even schedule maintenance tasks, making pool ownership more convenient and enjoyable. Smart technology not only enhances the user experience but also helps maintain your pool in optimal condition, ensuring it remains a beautiful, inviting space.

5. Redesign the Pool Deck and Surroundings

The area surrounding your pool is just as important as the pool itself. A well-designed pool deck can transform the entire look and feel of your outdoor space. Consider upgrading to premium materials like natural stone, pavers, or stamped concrete to create a sophisticated, cohesive environment. Incorporating additional elements like outdoor kitchens, fire pits, or lush landscaping can further enhance the space, turning your pool area into an outdoor living room where you can entertain guests or simply relax with family. A thoughtful redesign of your pool deck and surroundings can significantly increase your pool’s usability and aesthetic appeal, making it a true extension of your home.

Transform Your Pool into a Luxurious Oasis

Renovating your pool is an investment in your property’s value, your lifestyle, and your enjoyment of your outdoor space. By updating the pool finish, installing energy-efficient equipment, adding water features, incorporating smart technology, and redesigning the deck and surroundings, you can create a pool area that is both functional and breathtakingly beautiful. Ready to get started? Contact our expert team today to discuss how we can help you transform your pool into the luxurious oasis you’ve always dreamed of.

Caring for Your Lawn During Summer Weather

Challenging summer weather conditions, such as drought and high temperatures, can make it difficult to maintain a lush and healthy lawn. However, with the right lawn care strategies, you can help your grass survive and even thrive during this drought period. To ensure your lawn stays green and resilient, it’s crucial to implement effective watering techniques, soil management, and grass maintenance practices. Proper lawn care during drought conditions includes deep watering, using mulch to retain moisture, and mowing at a higher height to shade the soil, reducing evaporation.

Read on to discover actionable tips and expert advice for maintaining a beautiful lawn during this challenging season.

Estates_OBrien_Guest_House (1)

Understanding Summer Weather’s Impact on Your Lawn

During periods of drought, the soil gradually dries out from the surface downward. Brown patches on your lawn indicate that individual grass plants aren’t receiving enough water, causing them to enter dormancy. While dormant lawns typically recover with improved conditions, prolonged drought may require re-grassing in specific areas. Dormancy can vary across different parts of your property due to various factors.

Actions to Protect Your Lawn

1. Lawn Height: Mowing your lawn at a higher cut allows taller grass blades to shade the soil, reducing evaporation. This practice is crucial for conserving moisture, especially during dry spells.

2. Prioritize Irrigation: Turn off drip zones for established plants to allocate water more effectively to your lawn, ensuring it receives adequate hydration.

3. Partial Dormancy: Allowing certain areas of your lawn to go dormant can conserve water, focusing resources on maintaining the most crucial sections of your property.

4. Address Radiated Heat: Areas with ledges, rocks, or hard surfaces like sidewalks and driveways tend to retain and radiate heat, causing localized brown spots. Solutions include increasing topsoil depth or creating separate irrigation zones to provide additional water where needed.

5. Irrigation System Audit: Evaluate your irrigation system’s design, sprinkler head placement, and watering duration. Weak spots in the system become apparent as brown patches during droughts. An audit can pinpoint issues and suggest improvements for more efficient water distribution.

Ensuring Water Availability

Municipal Water: Navigate watering restrictions by applying for a Large Property Variance application. This step ensures compliance while meeting your lawn’s water needs.

Well Water: Properties relying on wells must manage water usage carefully. Extensive irrigation can significantly lower well levels, risking damage to pumps and wells. Consult with us to optimize your irrigation schedule for well protection and lawn health.

Understanding how drought impacts your lawn is the first step in effective lawn care. Implementing these strategies can help your lawn thrive despite challenging weather conditions

Spotted Lanternfly in Connecticut & New York

What you need to know.

The invasive insect species, known as the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula), has become an increasing concern for property owners in Connecticut and New York. Originally native to Asia, these pests have made their way to the United States and are now wreaking havoc on various crops and trees. However, there are measures homeowners can take to combat their spread. And, Glengate is partnering with clients to answer questions and make effective treatments available. Read on for more information on the impact of spotted lanternfly infestations on properties in Connecticut and New York, along with how we can all work together to lessen the spread.

The Threat of Spotted Lanternfly

Spotted Lanternfly blog1

The spotted lanternfly poses a significant threat to both agriculture and forestry, as these insects feed on the sap of over 70 different plant species, including important crops like grapes, apples, hops, and hardwood trees. By puncturing the plant tissue with their piercing mouthparts, spotted lanternflies drain vital nutrients, weakening plants and potentially causing irreversible damage. This has raised concerns among farmers, orchard growers, and homeowners alike.

Recent Sightings and Expansion
Originally discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014, the spotted lanternfly has since spread to neighboring states, including Connecticut and New York. Infestations of these insects have been reported in various counties across both states, prompting local authorities to raise awareness and implement control measures. But, homeowners in affected areas need to be vigilant and proactive in combatting the spread of spotted lanternflies, as well.

Identifying the Spotted Lanternfly
The spotted lanternfly can be identified by several distinctive characteristics. In its nymph stage, it appears black with white spots and develops red patches as it matures into an adult. Its distinctive feature is its hind wings, which display bright red and black markings, resembling a colorful mosaic when fully open. These unique attributes make identification relatively easy, helping residents to spot and report the presence of these insects.

Preventing and Controlling Infestations

Spotted Lanternfly blog1 (2)

To prevent the spread of spotted lanternflies, homeowners can take several measures:

Inspect and Report
Regularly inspect your property, including trees, outdoor furniture, and vehicles, for the presence of spotted lanternflies. If spotted, report the sighting to your local authority or agricultural extension service.

Remove Egg Masses
Female spotted lanternflies lay their eggs in large clusters on smooth surfaces like tree trunks, outdoor furniture, or vehicles. Carefully scrape off and destroy these egg masses to prevent hatching.

Plant Selection
Choose plant species that are less susceptible to spotted lanternflies. Working with local agricultural extension services can provide valuable guidance.

Remove Tree of Heaven
This highly invasive tree (Ailanthus altissima) is a preferred host to spotted lanternfly and is now common to our Northeastern landscapes; it’s often seen in disturbed areas such as roadsides. Removing it from our landscapes will help control spotted lanternfly populations.

The increasing presence of spotted lanternflies in Connecticut and New York demands swift action from homeowners to prevent and control infestations. Recognizing the distinctive features of these invasive insects and implementing preventive measures are essential steps. To protect our crops and trees, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, collaborate with local authorities, and take the necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the spotted lanternfly threat.

By working together, we can minimize the spread of this destructive insect, preserving the beauty and health of our natural environment and agricultural landscapes in Connecticut and New York.

Glengate's Commitment

Spotted Lanternfly blog1 (3)

While spotted lanternfly has established populations in other states, it is still new to Connecticut and New York. Over the coming months, Glengate’s in-house experts will be working hard to ensure we know all there is to know.

We specialize in the treatment of ornamental trees, shrubs, and shade tree trunks up to sixteen feet in height, located on your main property.

Our treatment is designed to help control the population and reduce the lanternfly’s impact. It’s important to note, however, that it does not repel these pests, but kills them on contact. Spotted lanternfly has the tendency to reappear regularly, so while our treatment cannot guarantee a completely lanternfly-free property, we’ll work hard to make sure that these pests do not become a major nuisance.

Connecticut's New Pool Barrier Code & What You Need to Know

Connecticut’s pool safety codes have always included specific requirements about fencing around residential pools. However, as of October 1, 2022, Connecticut has adopted the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, allowing pools that have an approved automatic pool cover to waive compliance with barrier fence requirements.

Wondering what that means for you? We asked our in-house experts to walk us through the safety considerations and design opportunities of this new rule, and what we’re doing to provide the highest quality of care for our clients.

Safety Considerations

View More: http://landinophoto.pass.us/gelngatelandscape

Safety remains our top priority, and we encourage you to consider some of the following ways to ensure that your pool remains as safe as possible.

Think in terms of “Layers of Protection”
At Glengate, we think in terms of “layers of protection” – to keep every family as safe as possible. The first layer is always adult supervision, but we encourage pool owners to build additional safety features into their pool design, including: barriers, automatic pool covers, door alarms, water level sensors, and more. Just because the code does not require a barrier with an automatic pool cover doesn’t mean you shouldn’t incorporate one! Learn more about layers of protection.

Know your Property
Each family, and each property, is unique and will require their own layers of protection. Some things you might think about include: Do you have young children or pets that don’t know how to swim? How far is your property from your neighbors? If close by, do your neighbors have children, pets, or frequent guests with children? Do wild animals such as deer, skunks, or bears live in your area? These animals are often drawn to water and risk drowning in your pool.

Maintain your Cover
Swimming pools are a great source of joy and memories for homeowners, and having a safe, secure pool ensures peace of mind. When relying on an automatic pool cover to provide a layer of protection to your home, we recommend working with a qualified pool cover company and scheduling regular maintenance to keep your cover in good working condition at all times.

Design Opportunity

glengate218612

Whether our clients are interested in a landscape free of barriers, or if they prefer to incorporate a fence for privacy or safety reasons, we’re excited by the chance to continue thinking innovatively about pool environments.

Explore New Barriers
A beautiful fence can be both functional and sophisticated, adding elegance to a property while also providing privacy and safety for its inhabitants. From glass fences to fences hidden behind beautiful hedges, and more, our designers are skilled at incorporating pool barriers seamlessly into our designs. However, this new rule allows us to be even more creative, playing with fence height and spacing to provide a level of protection with a lighter, airier feel and less visual interruption.

Organic Transitions
The reduced requirement for pool barriers allows us to define landscapes in new ways. Whether you’re looking for uninterrupted views, or more natural, organic transitions between outdoor spaces, we’ll work with you to create an environment tailored to your lifestyle.

Glengate's Commitment

glengate218607

While the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code has been adopted by several other municipalities, it is still new to Connecticut. Over the coming months, Glengate’s in-house experts will be working hard to ensure we know all there is to know.

Town-level Modifications
Town governments have the authority to impose more stringent regulations than the state requires. As local towns familiarize themselves with this new rule, our experts will be monitoring any additional elements each individual town may consider.

Additional Training
Our Pool Care Technicians are all knowledgeable about the automatic pool covers we install. Over the coming months and beyond, we will continue to deepen our understanding of safety covers and learn new troubleshooting techniques so that our technicians are able to help open or close a malfunctioning cover until the pool cover company can address the underlying problem.

Five Steps to Creating a Thriving Ecosystem in Your Backyard

Explore the plants that attract and aid butterflies and birds.

There has been a growing trend in recent years for creating more natural backyard ecosystems and, in turn, making them more bird and butterfly friendly. After all, these are the creatures we rely upon to pollinate our plants and sustain our food and natural resources. Luckily, creating a beautiful home landscape while also preserving biodiversity has never been easier. Here are five ways to make your own backyard into a wildlife-supporting habitat.

1. Manage Invasives

Most of the non-native or exotic plants you’ll find on properties in our area (ie. azaleas, boxwood, roses) are harmless to our eco-systems. However, there are some that have gotten out of control, choking out and displacing native species that are crucial to our local wildlife. Identifying and removing invasives is an important first step in creating a backyard eco-system. Our property care teams have years of experience managing these unwanted plants.

2. Plant Native Species

It’s possible, of course, to create a beautiful home landscape using native plants only—but even just adding a few varying species goes a long way. Did you know, for instance, that a native oak tree can support the caterpillars of around 500 species of butterflies and moths? Their larvae are a major source of food for our local songbirds. Native herbaceous perennials such as monarda and lobelia will attract hummingbirds to your property, as they feed on these flowers’ nectar. Want to see a steady stream of monarch butterflies coming through? Plant some goldenrod, asters, or coneflowers. And consider a patch of milkweed; it’s the only plant monarch caterpillars will eat. Let us help you select native plants (that have evolved to support our local food webs), and create balance between the needs of wildlife and our desire to be surrounded by beauty.

3. Provide Cover for Birds and Bugs

Shrubs offer smaller birds a place of protection from predators and bad weather, as well as cover for nesting and foraging for food. Trees (like the oak mentioned above), act as perches for larger birds. And leaving some leaves in undisturbed areas on your property during fall clean-up is beneficial to the caterpillars that over-winter in leaf piles.

4. Add Water

Bathing in water is an important facet of birds’ feather maintenance. And a birdbath can be an entertaining focal point in a smaller garden. Have more space? We have designed and installed small ponds on many properties. Not only will the birds benefit, but you’ll attract other wildlife—such frogs and bats that which will feed on unwanted insects like mosquitos.

5. Go Organic

Many homeowners choose to limit synthetic chemical use out of concern for the safety of their pets and families. This is also one of the easiest ways to enhance the presence of wildlife in our home landscapes. When it comes to use of herbicides for weeds, Glengate takes care not to over-treat affected problem areas with heavy-handed chemical applications. But we do also have a comprehensive organic program that includes OMRI- and NOFA-approved products. Just one more way we can help you create your own thriving backyard eco-system.

Top Three Reasons to Choose Organic Lawn and Plant Care

Have you ever considered organic lawn and plant care? This means trading in synthetic fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides for organic lawn and plant applications (that are less harmful to humans and the environment) and encouraging natural chemical and biological processes to foster plant health on your property. At Glengate, we are always mindful of how the management of your lawn and plants may affect the health of your family and pets, and our shared environment. Our horticulturists are trained and licensed to implement organic care, which we offer to Glengate’s property care clients. Many of our customers have opted for our organic program, enjoying both peace of mind and a beautiful home landscape. If you’re wondering why organic might be the way to go, read on for three major reasons to make the switch—plus how Glengate can help you do it.

1. For your family’s (and your pets’) health

Glengate Company

Probably the first and foremost reason many of our clients have changed to Glengate’s organic lawn and plant healthcare program is for the well-being of their families and pets. Studies have shown that some conventional pesticides may be harmful with frequent exposure, causing possible respiratory disease, endocrine system disruption, harm to the nervous system, and even cancer. Children and pets may be at higher risk due to their closer proximity to the ground (ie. a grass lawn where chemicals are used). And pesticides may be tracked inside our homes on shoes and pets who play outside.

2. To Protect Our Wildlife, Especially Pollinators

Glengate Company

You’ve most likely heard that our pollinators—especially birds and bees—are in decline. This is concerning for many reasons, but mainly because they are a crucial part of our food economy and our ecosystems’ food webs. According to the National Pesticide Safety Education Center, honey bee pollination adds more than $15 billion in value to U.S. agricultural crops each year. In other words, pollinators are essential in growing our fruits, vegetables and nuts. But some synthetic pesticides used to control other insects can harm bees, even though they aren’t the intended target. They also reduce the number of desirable insects that birds prey upon; this is one reason why researchers believe bird populations are in decline. (a 2019 report led by a Cornell researcher reveals wild bird populations in the continental U.S. and Canada have gone down 30% since 1970; that’s billions of birds).

3. To Protect Our Environment

Synthetic products are also having an effect on our environment. For example, when the excess nitrogen seeps into our groundwater or runs off into waterways, it can cause something called an algae bloom. Some algae is natural, but excessive amounts decompose in a way that depletes water of oxygen—making that body of water uninhabitable to fish and other aquatic organisms. In addition, some weed killers are toxic to aquatic plants that act as buffers between lawns and waterways and stabilize erosion. In short, non-organic fertilizers and pesticides are known to disrupt the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

For our clients who wish to minimize exposure to synthetics and select our organic program, Glengate’s approach is three-fold: we follow an integrated pest management protocol—meaning we target pests and weeds at the optimal time, based on growing and life cycles, for the best possible control and results; our trained and licensed lawn and plant health technicians use OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) and NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Association)-approved products; and we make recommendations on optimizing soil, since a dense, deeply rooted lawn is less susceptible to weeds, disease, and pests.

Making the switch to organic lawn and plant health care isn’t always a perfect process, and there will undoubtably be some weeds or pests during the transition. But we, and our clients who have gone organic, have found it to be absolutely worthwhile—for the well-being of our families and this beautiful part of the world we call home.
